The Powder Magazine, 1713
AboutThe Powder Magazine was completed by 1713 and housed about five tons of gunpowder to protect colonial Carolina from a variety of threats. The arsenal is the only standing component of the fortification system that once surrounded Charles Town (Charleston). The South Carolina Society has preserved this historical site since 1902 and maintains it as a museum focused on the colonial history of the state.
