Award for Preserving History's Future

About the Award

In 2022, the NSCDA presented its very first Award for Preserving History’s Future to Charles Duell, in recognition of his remarkable preservation efforts at Middleton Place in Charleston, SC. Though not a Dame himself, Mr. Duell embodies the NSCDA mission with a life devoted to protecting and celebrating our nation’s heritage.

Now, as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence, we’re thrilled to announce the revival of this award—with an even more powerful reach and purpose.

Thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous Dame, beginning in 2026 the award will be presented at each Biennial Council, honoring an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to historic preservation, patriotic service or historical education. In addition to our deep gratitude and national recognition, the recipient will receive a $10,000 monetary award to designate, enabling them to further their impact on history's future.

This prestigious award is a unique chance to honor someone outside of our membership who exemplifies the values we hold dear. Nominations must be submitted by a Corporate Society and cannot be a member of the NSCDA.

Nominations are be submitted by email to the NSCDA Award for Preserving History’s Future, Chair, Joy Daniels Schwartz - gajoy44@gmail.com
