A close variation appears in a register of burials for St. James the Lesser, Tatham, Lancashire, England, UK.
Appears after the last burial of the year 1714 and reads as follows:
“Could we foresee our nearness to the Grave, What thoughts, what cogitations should we have?”
This suggests an earlier or contemporary source of the verse yet to be found.
