Notes
Dickinson, Mary, c.1809, Berks Co., PA, pg. 149 Farra, Sussannah, 1809, n.p., pg. 155 Jefferis, Ann, 1804, West Chester, PA, pg. 180 Laing, Martha, 1810, n.p., pg. 185 Nicholson, Rebecca, 1801, n.p., pg. 201 Patterson, Sarah Ann Ewalt, 1819, Pittsburg (no state mentioned), pg. 205 Wisner, Mary, 1801, New York, pg. 243 A Later variant found suggests there may be an earlier source poem that just hasn’t been uploaded to the internet. It should be noted that almost all the examples and the variant appear to be Pennsylvania samplers. Although Bolton and Coe suggest “Hannah Hollingswort” in the notes for Sussanah Farra’s sampler, I could find no works by this person.
