- (ON THE INVENTION OF LETTERS—THE ANSWER)
The noble art to Cadmus owes it rise
Of painting words and speaking to the eyes
He first in wondrous maggick letters bond
The airy voice and stopp’d the flying sound
The various figuers by his pencil wrought
Give colour form and body to the thought

- Notes:
The info in these links are in conflict. The Answer that Mary Monck wrote on her deathbed to her husband does not seem to contain this verse (although I have not found a complete copy). There are references to this verse that say Mary Monck is the author. Dates are different and although some publications are mentioned I can’t find copies on line to prove this. Mary Monck was Irish but lived later years in Bath. Unsure where she wrote this verse.
