This is a conventional sign off for samplers and other text. Its origin most likely lies in tradition rather than any published source.
An inscription by a shaky, possibly juvenile, hand is found in this book in the collection of the British Museum. Although the book is dated 1640, we cannot assume Elizabeth Harris wrote in this year. It is interesting to note that “England” is her nation, so it’s not only a North American tradition and not confined to samplers only.
