American Paintings by Our Ancestors

The Historical Activities Committee undertook the Portrait Survey in the early 1970′s to help provide The National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution with an inventory of early portraits. The Smithsonian continues to be interested in adding  information about pictures and portraits  by American painters prior to 1914.  For information about this project contact:
